Fagus forests in Japan and southern China have the richest plant biodiversity and endemism in temperate areas. The development of the forests through the geologic time scale has been studied in Japan and China separately. In this research project, we study the vegetation and flora of the forests and morphology of the leaf, seed and pollen of modern and fossil Fagus species in Japan and China with Chinese researchers. The purposes of our research are to clarify the evolutionary trend of Japanese endemic species, Fagus crenata and the development of Fagus forest in Japan and China. We also show the importance of Fagus forests as historical, natural heritages and make an appeal for the preservation of the forests.
