Southeast Asia has recently achieved rapid industrialization and economic development, but at a serious environmental cost of air pollution. Further, some parts of Southeast Asia often lose power as a result of power shortages. Fuel cells have attracted much attention, as a clean power system solving Asia's environmental problem, and as a back-up power supply solving Asia's power-outage problem. In order to introduce and proliferate fuel cells in Southeast Asia, we should develop fuel cell systems which utilize fuel available there. This study reviews the power outage situation in Southeast Asia, examines the fuel available there, and proposes suitable fuel cell systems.
