Field survey about the future of floating rice cultivation in flood-prone area in South-east Asia

Project Leader:
Faculty of Agriculture

Floating rice is grown under less favorable environmental conditions, where the water depth of the fields exceeds 1 m during more than a month in the rainy season in South-east Asia. Recently, farmers can get water for plant cultivation even in the dry season in the central plain of Thailand, because dams and irrigation canals have been built. Thus, the cultivation of the high yielding varieties of rice increases in the dry season there. But the cultivation of the floating rice still remains. We want to know the present situation and the future of floating rice cultivation for the life of the farmers there, investigating the income of farmers and cropping systems in this area.
